Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom Tooth Removal/Extraction

Removing wisdom tooth is the most common of all dental procedures in the US. This procedure alone is said to be worth more than $3 billion, thanks to the 5 million people who extract their teeth every year.

What is Wisdom Tooth?

Wisdom teeth refer to the third molars that grow on each side of the upper and lower jaws. These are the last to erupt – at around the time you are in your twenties. The problem with wisdom teeth is that by the time they erupt there’s little room in the mouth. They sometimes grow at an angle or erupt only partially, causing severe pain and discomfort.

When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Advised?

Ideally, the wisdom tooth need not be extracted as long they do not cause severe pain or discomfort. Only when the teeth emerge partially or at an angle would they suggest extraction. They’re often a cause of oral infection and gum problems. Tooth extraction is also suggested when there’s repeated infection or cyst. Sometimes, the wisdom tooth can be problems to the nearby teeth or tooth decay.

How is Wisdom Teeth Removed?

The dentist injects a local anesthesia to numb the area around the teeth before extracting it. Sometimes, the teeth may have to be cut into smaller pieces before extraction and sometimes the dentist may have to place a small cut to allow the teeth to come out.

After Removing…

The dentist gives detailed instruction about the post-operative care to minimize pain and reduce complications. This includes taking prescribed medications, placing ice packs on the area where surgery was performed, and avoiding rigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours after tooth extraction.
